Top-seeded and World No. 2 Dane Caroline Wozniacki was a straight set winner over Olga Govortsova in Sunday's $220,000 final at MPS Group Championships. The defending champion ran her match streak here at Ponte Vedra Beach to 10 with a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over the unseeded Belarussian, who was searching for her first-ever singles title on the pro circuit.
Wozniacki won 70 percent of her first serves and was buoyed by eight double- faults from Govortsova en route to her seventh career WTA crown and first of 2010. The 19-year-old was runner-up to Jelena Jankovic in March at Indian Wells.
"We had so many incredible shots in the match; it was all just about hanging in there in the end," Wozniacki said. "I love playing here. I've won 10 matches in a row here, I'm so happy to win this title again. Of course you play better in the places you like. I've done it in New Haven before. Hopefully I can make it 15 matches in a row here next year."
The 2009 U.S. Open runner-up, Wozniacki evened her career record in Tour finals at 7-7, while Govortsova fell to 0-3. The 21-year-old's last final came in a 2009 loss to Francesca Schiavone in Moscow.
Sunday's final was the first-ever meeting between Wozniacki and Govortsova, with the Dane picking up $37,000 for her winning effort.
"I had to change something in the second set, so I just tried to attack every single shot I could," Govortsova said. "I was trying really hard right until the end. She just played too well. It was a good week for me: first tournament on clay this year, first final of the year...I'm very happy with my week."
