Postseason matchups get under way today for Beaufort County volleyball and tennis teams. The Class 4-A and 3-A playoffs cycle through this week and continue over the following two weeks. Each of the four Beaufort County high schools -- Beaufort High, Battery Creek, Bluffton and Hilton Head High -- will be represented in at least one of the two sports.
The two-time defending state champion Seahawks girls tennis team begins its quest for a three-peat Thursday with a home match against Camden. Hilton Head High finished undefeated in Region 8-AAA yet again and lost just one match during the regular season. Runner-ups in Region 8-AAA, Bluffton (8-4) will seek its first-ever postseason win at Wilson the same afternoon. Beaufort High (17-4), winners of Region 8-AAAA for the fourth straight year, will host Aiken today at 4 p.m. in the Class 4-A playoffs. The Eagles lost to Lexington in the third round last season.
After winning its first outright region title since 1989, Beaufort High's (13-12) volleyball team will host North Augusta today in a 6 p.m. match. The Eagles lost just once in Region 8-AAAA play and will look to improve on last year's first-round playoff exit. Bluffton (26-13-3), the Region 8-AAA champs, will battle Socastee in a 6 p.m. first-round match with hopes of rekindling its 2007 success, when the Bobcats won the state title. For the first time this decade, Region 8-AAA runner-ups Battery Creek will host a first-round contest when it plays St. James in a 6 p.m. tilt. And finally, in other Class 3-A action, Hilton Head High will travel to Myrtle Beach.
